This first chapter will explain the motivation for the book and the project on which the work reported in the book is based. We introduce, in very basic terms, the main motivation of using distributed antenna systems in next generation wireless systems, for reasons of coverage and capacity, and the significance of a hybrid fiber-radio infrastructure to transparently connect remote antenna units to a central unit where joint processing can be performed.
