Cognitive Radios
George F. Elmasry · 2012
Cognitive radio (CR) engineers and scientists argue that an order of magnitude improvement in spectrum capacity can be achieved with the advances in CR protocols and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation. References that focus on cognitive algorithms conceptualize a CR as having three main components: a radio or physical layer, a media-access control (MAC) layer with a cognitive engine as its focus and operating environments (OEs). The concept of using some form of centralized control in a cognitive network, where nodal interest can be overridden by the network interest, is more applicable to the tactical use of CRs. Software communications architecture (SCA)’s intended goal is to provide architecture for the deployment, management, interconnection, and intercommunication of software components in embedded, distributed computing communication systems. Spectrum sensing is the only area of radio communications where one can understand how to couple communications with CRs. Controlled Vocabulary Terms cognitive radio; media access protocol; military communication
