Technical Countermeasures
Ira Winkler, Dr Tracy Celaya Brown · 2020
This chapter discusses technical counter-measures for mitigating user-initiated loss in an organization. Personnel countermeasures generally involve the hiring, maintenance, and separation of employees. They include background checks, continuous monitoring, employee management systems, and misuse and abuse detection. Physical countermeasures are those technical systems that limit or track access to physical resources, including access control systems, surveillance and safety systems, point-of-sales systems, inventory systems, and computer tracking systems. Operational technical countermeasures are those tools that are used to track processes and workflow. They include accounting systems, customer relationship management, operational technology, and workflow management. The chapter also describes cybersecurity countermeasures such as anti-malware software, whitelisting, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, automated patching, vulnerability management tools, behavioral analytics, web content filters, wireless and remote security, mobile device management, multifactor authentication, and encryption.
