Reversible Multiplexer and Demultiplexer with Other Logical Operations

Hafiz Md. Hasan Babu · 2020

Multiplexers are mainly used to increase the amount of data that can be sent over the network within a certain amount of time and bandwidth. They can also be used to implement Boolean functions of multiple variables. This chapter describes some related reversible logic gates and their applications in multiplexers and demultiplexers. Reversible logic is a computing paradigm in which one-to-one mapping is maintained between the input and the output vectors. The chapter explains how reversible R-I and R-II gates are used to construct reversible multiplexer and demultiplexer circuits. These two gates can be used for realization of basic logical functions such as AND, XOR, and multiplexer. Besides these functions, other advantage of the R-I gate is that it can be used as a 1:2 d-multiplexer without requiring any extra logic circuits and the R-II gate can be used as a half adder circuit.
