Security Infrastructure

It is often that a security mechanism is designed to establish certain trust relationships between two entities. For example, conducting an entity authen- tication mechanism is to assure an identity, claimed by the entity, is trustable. Verifying a message authentication code is to assure the trustworthiness of the origin and the integrity of the message. However, a trust relationship cannot be established from the air. It relies on already existing or already established trust relationships to establish the new trust. The already existing trust re- lationships are often used to provide services which are referred to as infras- tructure support. This chapter introduces commonly employed infrastructure support for a secure communication system.
