Idea 42: Redundancy in language
MISSING-VALUE MISSING-VALUE · 2018
Grammar needs authority if it is to work. Rules are taught about spelling and grammatical patterns. This can have the side effect of students accepting grammar just because it is the rules. Some thought into the way that the system of grammatical structure works would be good in widening students&s; sense of the necessity and purposefulness of grammar. Scientists, creationists, philosophers and the like have spent a lot of time considering whether the world is systematic or chaotic. Mathematicians, physicists and economists look for system within chaotic structures. Words and grammatical structures need space in which to exist and there has to be an element of redundancy within the language. The language has built-in redundancy. If every sound were productive, comprehension would be hindered. Students could consider whether this highly organised and structured vocabulary is helpful or not. When teachers study foreign languages at school there is a good deal of vocabulary to be learned.
