With this chapter we begin to deal with the problems of the neural coding of sensory experience-a set of topics that have only begun to emerge as a coherent scientific subtopic in the last decade or so. Prior to the 1960s, only a few workers had dealt with the specific subproblems of wh at we now appreciate as a much more complex and general inquiry into the relations hip between experience and nervous action.
