Computers are capable of delivering many kinds of instruction, as evidenced by the wide variety of educational software available today. Unfortunately, such software is often disappointingly rigid or limited in scope. In an effort to better adapt instruction to student needs, Digital&s;s Educational Services Research and Development group has been investigating new, more flexible approaches to building environments for learning (Mackay, 1 986a) .
