Reproducing and Producing Reading Comprehension Research and Testing

Arlette Ingram Willis · 2012

Foundational to understanding the role of reading comprehension within the process of ideological hegemony is understanding it within the contexts in which it developed, and acknowledging that the approaches to reading comprehension always have been inadequate to explain how reading comprehension takes place. The inadequacy arises because the theories proposed are not complex enough to capture the process for all. Hall (2003) avows: It is a form of ideological and cultural imperialism to suggest that the explanations proposed by the dominant class are adequate or universal and can explain the process for all learners. The onesidedness that Hall observed continued among reading comprehension researchers throughout early 20th century. Most egregious were reading researchers who were seemingly unaffected by the shortsightedness of their explanations of reading comprehension research and testing.
