Remote Access Concepts and Techniques

Peter V. Southwick · Auerbach Publications eBooks · 2020

This chapter presents remote access from three separate views. The first is a presentation of remote access scenarios and the concerns and solutions present in those scenarios. The second view is an analysis of the platforms that are available today to solve those problems. The final view is of the options possible for the implementation of the solutions. If network managers are concerned principally with security, remote access users are concerned about access speeds. Security is followed closely by response time and, finally, a concern that has recently been giving network managers headaches, Addressing. The key to the success of the local area network (LAN) has been the simplicity of the channel protocols found on the LAN. LAN-to-LAN scenarios have the benefit of having dedicated devices assigned to the task of providing connectivity. In most cases, higher speed connections can be made to a local Internet service provider than over an international direct-dialed call.
