Passport Problems

The procedures employed in the issuance of passports and the right to appeal passport refusals was reviewed by the Senate Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights, chaired by Senator Thomas C. Hennings (D. Mo.) at hearings held November 15–16, 1955. Geoffrey F. Chew, Federation of American Scientists Passport Committee Chairman, and physicist from the University of Illinois, testified regarding the cases of five scientists and presented the recommendations of the FAS Passport Committee. Mr. Chew's testimony is printed below and is followed by a summary of the statement made by Professor Linus Pauling.
