Privacy by Design Overview

Chris Moschovitis · 2021

The phrase privacy by design means different things to different people. It is essentially a framework to proactively (“by design”) integrate privacy principles into the design of software, hardware, networks, and business practices. Some of the frameworks for managing technology, privacy, and cybersecurity are: Capability Maturity Model Integration, which was developed by Carnegie Mellon and used as a process improvement and appraisal framework, Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology, also by ISACA, and the two National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) frameworks: Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) and Privacy Framework. NIST's CSF is extremely popular in the United States and for good reason. It is easy to understand, extremely well documented, and with the right investment of skill and resources can be implemented across all size companies and industries.
