Overview of the drug target compendium
Edward D. Zanders · 2015
The process of selecting targets for pharmaceutical development requires decision making based on both scientific and commercial criteria. This chapter first presents introductory comments of the book, which is designed to be used by academic and industrial scientists. The drug target entries comprise the following: (1) gene name and symbol; (2) drug/investigational compound name and therapeutic indication or literature reference indicating potential for therapeutic intervention; and (3) genetic association with disease, if known. The entries in the book are organized into classes such as receptors, enzymes and transporters. The entries have also been subdivided based on cell surface and secreted proteins, entries classified by subcellular location, and as non-coding RNAs. The chapter presents a summary on the data entries presented in the book, which has 19,123 unique protein-coding gene entries that have been taken from HGNC site.
