The general public has by now heard much about the technological race the United States is running with the Japanese in the field of superconductivity, the creation of materials whose electrical resistance is so low that many new applications are now possible. Important though this race may be, another contest may be just as vital to this country’s position in the field of engineering and science, the field of supercomputers. They are computers whose design allows them to operate at tremendously high speeds. Until recently American computer manufacturers more or less had the field to themselves, but within the past three or four years Japanese firms have begun to enter the market.
