In his fascinating book, Under the Gun in Iraq, Cole described the challenges of working as a eld training ocer in post-occupation Iraq. Venturing beyond the classroom, he denoted the marked dierences in culture, mindset, and history of the region as exceptionally dicult to overcome. Tasked with training Iraqi police ocers in the full range of duties, from patrol to community policing, he explained the perspective required when police o- cers operate in a war zone: tact, self-control, and prudent decision-making abilities under extreme stress.
