Open|SpeedShop is an open source performance tool project (released under GPL) targeting Linux workstations and large scale clusters with IA64, IA32, EM64T, and AMD64 processors. It provides many essential performance analysis steps in a single, unified framework and is designed for both novice and advanced users: basic functionality can be used without a large learning curve while more advanced functionality is optionally available throughout the tool.In this tutorial we will introduce the attendees to O|SS with step-by-step instructions on how to apply it to real applications. We will cover O|SS's comprehensive GUI as well as its ability to perform a wide variety of experiment types (including sampling and tracing). In the second half of the tutorial, we will then address more advanced issues like parallel performance analysis of MPI codes, the use of O|SS in scripting and batch environments, and the development of simple O|SS extensions and customizations.
