A Note on Transcription, Translation, and ToponymsAlthough most transcriptions in this manuscript follow the Library of Congress system, in the main text I render certain Russian terms in more familiar form. The name Maksim Gor'kii is therefore transliterated as Maxim Gorky, just as the names Aleksandr, Ol'ga, and Aleksei are presented as Alexander, Olga, and Alexei, respectively. To make this manuscript more accessible to English-language readers, I also translate several terms that most scholars simply transliterate. So, I refer to the gorodskoi soviet or gorsoviet as the "city council" or "municipal government," never as the "city soviet."Similarly, I use the word "province" to refer to Nizhnii Novgorod gubernia, krai, and oblast'.
