THE JPEG2000 IMAGE COMPRESSION STANDARD
Patrick J. Van Fleet · 2019
This chapter begins with a brief overview of the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) standard. It explains how the biorthogonal wavelet transformation is used in the JPEG2000 standard. The biorthogonal wavelet transformation is one reason the compression rates for JPEG2000 are superior to those of JPEG. The iterative process of the transformation makes it easy to see how it can be implemented to perform progressive image transmission. For lossless compression, the members of the JPEG settled on the LeGall filter pair. These filters are symmetric and close in length. The best feature of this filter pair is that it can easily be adapted to map integers to rational numbers. The JPEG2000 uses a method of arithmetic coding called Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation. The chapter also presents examples of how the naive JPEG2000 algorithm works. It performs lossy compression and lossless compression of the image and then compresses a color image.
