This chapter presents some techniques to monitor and control the power and performance of IT devices, and the data center infrastructure itself with its pumps and chillers. Most data center integrated monitoring software available on the market are able to inform the user if there is enough space, available network ports or electric sockets in rack cabinets for new equipment. Measuring and monitoring accurately is mandatory step before controlling the behavior. The chapter discusses the sensors and related application programming interfaces to measure power and temperature and how to monitor the performance. One way to manage and optimize the power and energy of servers is at the job scheduler level when jobs are submitted. The system power is obtained by aggregating bottom up the information of all jobs running on the system.
