Fundamentals of Random Variables and Random Processes for Simulation

Kluwer Academic Publishers eBooks · 2005

Random variables and random processes are used to model signals and noise encountered in communication systems and for modeling the randomly time-varying behavior of some types of communication channels and other components. A basic understanding of the concepts and the theory underlying random variables and random processes is necessary for developing simulation models and performance estimation techniques for communication systems. The focus of this chapter was on the basic concepts and properties of random variables and random processes, and models which will be used for simulating communication systems. We also presented analytical and simulation techniques for computing the response of systems driven by random inputs. Bounds and approximations which can be used to simplify simulation procedures and validate simulation procedures were also discussed. Material presented in this chapter will be used in the following chapters to:
