How the West Was Negative One is an excellent program for any student ready to work with negative numbers and order of operations. The authors suggest that users be in grades 7-12. However. I found that students in grades 6-8 enjoyed it a lot. as well. In addition to computational skills, the program requires problem analysis and can be used in cooperative-learning groups as well as individual or competitive situations. My students were not overly impressed with the “western” theme, but they enjoyed the accompanying sound effects.
