Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Guest Access

This chapter explains how security is used to control and monitor BYOD access to a WLAN. Mobile device management (MDM) solutions can be used to remotely manage and control company-owned as well as personal mobile Wi-Fi devices. MDM solutions use server software or cloud services to configure client settings, along with client applications. The chapter also covers the many components of WLAN guest access and how it has evolved over the years. Guest access technology includes support for visitor devices along with employee BYOD devices. Consumerization of IT is a phrase used to describe a shift in information technology (IT) that begins in the consumer market and moves into business and government facilities. It has become commonplace for employees to introduce consumer market devices into the workplace after already embracing this new technology at home. The management strategy for company mobile devices usually entails more in-depth security because often the company devices have corporate documents and information stored on them.
