Reversible RAM and Programmable ROM

Hafiz Md. Hasan Babu · 2020

This chapter discusses two memory elements, namely, random access memory (RAM) and programmable read only memory (PROM). RAM's internal architecture can be viewed as a two dimensional array of memory cells. Each memory cell stores a single bit of data. The chapter describes a reversible architecture of RAM with a reversible gate, namely full-swing (FS) gate, and some sequential circuits. It explores the use of the reversible FS gate to generate a reversible decoder. The chapter introduces a reversible D flip-flop, which can be used to store bits of data in a reversible memory. It describes the design of 2-to-4 reversible decoder and the design of a reversible PROM. PROM consists of an AND plane and EX-OR plane, where AND plane is fixed and Ex-OR plane is programmable.
