Simulations in Assessment
Luke Devine, William C. McGaghie, Saul Barry Issenberg · 2019
This chapter focuses on the design and development of simulation-based assessments (SBAs) in health professions education. SBAs can be powerful assessment methods and often play an important role in competency-based medical education (CBME) assessment programs. This chapter provides rationale regarding why and when to use SBAs. Most importantly, it provides a practical and step-by-step approach of how to develop and implement SBAs. The core principle emphasized is that simulation should be chosen as an assessment method when it is the most appropriate method for a specific learning outcome. The chapter also provides valuable information on how to choose a specific simulation modality, develop a scenario, set standards and score an SBA.
