A History of Sound and Hearing Research

Drawing on research in anthropology, philosophy and soundscape and film studies, this chapter asserts the important role of the senses in everyday life and particularly of the ways sound and hearing mediate relationships between people, and between people and their physical surroundings. Examples from the ethnographic record and historical perspectives demonstrate that attitudes to sound and hearing are culturally and historically specific.
