In the recent years the wireless industry has witnessed an impressive surge on smartphone and data services adoption. This chapter provides useful insight to understand the impact of this traffic in the network, and discusses ideas to help tune the network for the growing smartphone customer base. The text analyzes in detail some of the key aspects that influence the end user experience, and provide some guidelines about how the smartphone performance can be tuned to take full advantage of the HSPA+ technology. The impact on network capacity derived from smartphone traffic is also analyzed, explaining the new challenges associated with these devices; in particular, the excessive generation of radio signaling. The chapter analyzes in detail how this signaling is generated, establishing comparison across different operating systems and applications, which are ultimately the responsible for these harmful effects.
