Computer and Internet Fraud: A Risk Identification Overview

Jonathan J. Rusch, US Department of Justice In the past three years, the tide of Internet fraud, both domestically and internationally, has risen steadily. A January 2003 report by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), “National and State Trends in Fraud and Identity Theft (January- December 2002),” shows that during the years 2000 to 2002, Internet fraud-related complaints rose continuously, in both numbers and percentages of all fraud complaints. By 2002, Internet fraud-related complaints accounted for 47% of 218 284 complaints filed with the FTC.
