Foundations of Algebraic Coding Theory

We shall describe the foundations of algebraic coding theory. We shall describe how the classical theory of algebraic codes transformed to include code over rings and codes in spaces with non-Hamming metrics. We shall focus on the MacWilliams relations, MDS codes and self-dual codes as examples of how the theory has developed.
