Decentralized Systems

This chapter shows how to use the concept of diagonal dominance to develop both static and adaptive decentralized controllers. It is shown that if one ensures that each subsystem is designed to be sufficiently stable using only local signals, then the composite system is stable. The static controller is designed using knowledge of the form of the interconnection between each of the other subsystems. It is shown that it is possible to design adaptive controllers in which an approximator is adjusted on-line to compensate for uncertainties in the isolated subsystem dynamics. It is also shown that it may be possible to adaptively compensate for interconnection uncertainties.
