Two approaches to reasoning from evidence or what econometrics can learn from biomedical research

Evidence-based policy currently resounds throughout the land (cf. Reiss, 2013, Chapter 11). This is perhaps hardly surprising – as it should not only be the case that policy goals are democratically legitimate, but also that policy interventions are justified as effective means to promote these goals. And how else could one justify a policy better than demonstrating that it is based on the best available evidence?
