Whither biometrics?

Participants in almost all fields of R&D indulge in crystal ball gazing from time to time, but there is no doubt that for the field of biometrics it is especially timely to look to the future. The debate around ID cards is a good example of why we need to ensure informed discussion rather than unfounded speculation. For while there are undoubtedly questions that quite reasonably should be raised, the political context of such an application inevitably introduces a dimension to discussions which can easily deflect attention from the underlying scientific issues.
