The Social Context of Learning Computer Programming

Much of the use of microcomputers in the classroom is social. Teachers often structure their classrooms so that students share computers. The National Survey of School Uses of Microcomputers (Becker, 1984), for example, found that teachers assigned groups of students to a computer 460/0 of the time. For another 200/0 of the time, teachers encouraged students to help each other even if they each had access to a computer.
