Representation: Indoor Spaces

Imad Afyouni, Cyril Ray, Christophe Claramunt · International Encyclopedia of Geography · 2017

The objective of this entry is to review current spatial data models and mobile data management techniques available for indoor spaces. In particular, the role of contextual and semantic dimensions when representing moving objects and deriving navigation services in indoor spaces is studied. A series of recommendations are suggested for the development of data management approaches, querying techniques, and indoor location‐based services, and some research challenges that are still open are presented. At the implementation level, some of the performance issues related to the development of flexible indexing schemes for moving objects in indoor spaces are discussed. Finally, current strategies and computing architectures for continuous location‐dependent query processing, while considering different indoor settings, are briefly evaluated. The entry concluded with a brief survey of some of the possibilities offered by the generalization of indoor spatial models at the city scale.
