Polaroid explains instant color slide system

Since its appetite was whetted last May at Polaroid Corp.'s annual meeting, the photographic community has been awaiting technical details of the company's system to make "instant" color and black-and-white slides. Polaroid managers had shown such slides at that meeting (C&EN, May 10, page 42). Now the technical details have been unveiled. The firm expects to introduce films, developing units, and slide mounters in the U.S. early next year. Starter kits of a developing unit, slide mounter, and 100 mounts may sell for less than $100. The company will offer three types of 35-mm slide films. One is a color film rated at ASA 40 in 12- and 36-exposure cartridges. The second is an ASA 400 black-and-white film in 12-exposure cartridges. The third is an ASA 125 black-and-white film in 36-exposure cartridges.
