As magnetic field lines break apart and reconnect, collisionless magnetic reconnection releases an explosive amount of energy. Such a reconnection plays an important role in a variety of astrophysical applications involving both hydrogen and electron-positron plasmas. Furthermore, collisionless magnetic reconnection is the dominant mechanism that enables plasma from solar winds to enter the Earth’s magnetosphere.
