Camera Moves Considered
Erica Hornung · 2013
This chapter discusses few types of camera moves such as lockoff, pan and tilt, truck/dolly/tracking, crane, steadicam or handheld, and focus pull or zoom. A lockoff shot is simply a shot in which the camera is motionless – it is locked on to a tripod or some other motionless mount. Painted or otherwise non-permanent frames resembling large mounted canvas are used to give the appearance of real buildings, walls, or other permanent structures on film, but are actually lightweight, and can be flown in or out easily per the requirements of the shoot. Horizontal movement in a filmed sequence caused by an improperly loaded film negative, dust in the motion picture camera, malfunctioning pulldown claw, or various other mechanical problems on the shoot. A shot in which the camera is mounted on a moving platform to move smoothly toward or away from the scene is referred to as a dolly or truck shot.
