A standard error of measurement (SEM) is a "margin of error" used to interpret a score. If you add the standard error of measurement to an examinee&s;s score and then subtract it from the score, you obtain the limits of the 68% confidence interval; that is, you obtain the points between which we have 68% confidence that an examinee&s;s true score lies.
