Practical Work Process Management Tips for Success in Project Execution
Chitram Lutchman · 2016
This chapter reviews and discusses successful work process tips that are useful during the execution stage of the project. These processes are by no means new; however, when not properly addressed, they have the potential to have a significant impact on both project cost and schedules during the project execution stage. A project leader or project leadership team should be aware of and responsive to the following common work processes: 1. Do not reinvent the wheel. 2. Ensure proper representations at process hazards analyses (PHAs) and hazards and operability studies (HAZOPS). 3. Use construction and commissioning organizations with consis- tently high standards of work. 4. Apply simple control systems that work. 5. Ensure ownership and buy-in by all stakeholders. 6. Get big quickly when required and lean in a well-orchestrated approach. 7. Delay process hazard introduction as long as possible. 8. Centralize the work permitting system. 9. Use commissioning and standard operating procedures (SOPs) at all times. 10. Maintain a log of activities and events on critical systems. 11. Have a backup or contingency plan 12. Flush all critical systems before putting into service. 13. Consider human factors in designs. 14. Know when to focus on optimization and efficiency improvements. 15. Ensure an effective document control system exists. 16. Capture and share lessons learned.
