This chapter covers the causes and effects of malfunctions on pneumatic and hydraulic systems and the need to provide a planned preventive maintenance system comprising regular checks and inspections as required for a given fluid power system. Fault diagnosis together with the principal causes of failure are listed and identified for both pneumatic and hydraulic systems. The use of trouble shooting and maintenance documentation together with internet access to relevant information as an aid to fault finding is stressed. The use of functional charts are explained and illustrated. The chapter concludes with a number of questions for the reader to attempt.
