Architecture of the 5G New Radio

Christopher Cox · 2020

Chapter 7 introduces the architecture of the 5G New Radio. The chapter begins by introducing the air interface protocol stack and the various channels and signals that the air interface uses. It continues by detailing the frequency bands that are supported by 5G, and the organization of a frequency band into subcarriers, resource blocks and bandwidth parts. The chapter also addresses how the time domain is organized into frames, subframes, slots and symbols, and introduces the air interface's use of multiple antennas. The chapter concludes by laying out a framework for data transmission and reception in 5G. The material leads in to five further chapters, which consider the air interface's detailed implementation.
