Computational models of single-word production account fairly well for both errorful and errorfree production data. This chapter reviews influential models and argues that, through the models, the field has acquired a good understanding of the processing steps that occur when words are retrieved and spoken, and the role of cascading and interaction in those steps. Furthermore, the models clarify currently unresolved theoretical issues, such as the extent to which lexical selection is competitive, and the role of incremental learning in tuning the production system.
