SINGLE CARRIER MODULATION AND NYQUIST SAMPLING THEORY
Feng Ouyang · 2019
This chapter addresses the Modulation block in the transmitter and the radio frequency blocks on both sides (circled by the ovals). It discusses how to convert data (bitstream) into symbols. The chapter focuses on the Symbol Mapping block. It also studies a class of pulse shaping filters, based on the Nyquist criterion. The spectrum of the waveform produced by the pulse shaping block has a support that extends to direct current. Therefore, such waveform is referred to as the baseband waveform. The baseband waveform may be further converted to a spectrum whose support extends from a lower frequency bound to a higher frequency bound (i.e., in a frequency band). The waveform after such conversion is referred to as passband waveform. The up-conversion block performs such conversion. The chapter covers the corresponding operation at the receiver, known as down-conversion.
