Hough transform

Naim Dahnoun · 2017

The Hough transform (HT) is a popular technique for feature extraction in computer vision and digital image processing. It was first filed for a patent in 1960 by Paul V. C. Hough and used later for the first time by Duda and Hart in 1972 to detect lines and curves in pictures. With the HT, one can detect lines, circles or any structures with a known parametric equation. This chapter shows the basic mathematics behind the HT for detecting straight lines and how to implement the HT. It explores how to increase the performance by looking at the algorithm and minimising the number of operations required, and how to use the graphical display using the Code Composer Studio. It is important to limit r and 0 in order to reduce the number of calculations and the size of the accumulator and therefore the memory size, especially when the image size is large.
