Securing Samba

Roderick W. Smith · Apress eBooks · 2004

Every month seems to bring a new security horror story reported in the mainstream press. Perhaps a new worm is on the loose, infecting computers via bugs or poor configuration of popular servers. Perhaps the problem is an attack that brought down a high-profile Web site. Whatever the case, these stories serve as reminders that you shouldn’t take computer security lightly. Fortunately, as of early 2004, no major attacks have involved Samba, but that doesn’t mean such attacks might not occur in the future. What’s more, Samba has had its share of security problems in the past, and small-scale attacks that don’t reach the mainstream media are certainly possible.
