Comment Insulting to EPs in Ski Country

Ms. Katz responds: I completely agree that a physician's outside interests and ties to the community are key when it comes to recruiting for retention. It's a point I emphasize strongly in the column. My comment regarding a candidate whose primary reason for taking a job is the love of skiing was simply an example of poor focus by the candidate. A candidate's primary focus should and must be the job first, and this focus should be a primary requirement of a potential employer. No matter how thrilled a physician may be to hit the slopes on a regular basis, if he is unhappy or performing poorly in the ED, those moguls and downhills are bound to suffer. This harmless example was not meant as an insult to physicians who ski or to Colorado physicians in particular.
