While Grabbe was away, Golovin removed Klugenau and appointed Faesy commander of Northern Daghestan. Although Golovin denied that he had appointed Faesy in order to allow him an opportunity to gain fame before leaving the Caucasus,7 this was exactly how everyone, including Faesy, interpreted his nomi nation. On his return Grabbe immediately reinstated Klugenau.
