Inner Products and Orthogonal Projections

A wavelet representation of a signal constitutes an orthogonal projection, like a shadow, of the signal on a space of wavelets. Therefore, this chapter reviews the linear algebra underlying the concept, theory, and applications of orthogonal projections. The theory reviewed here also appear in several textbooks, for instance, in linear algebra [14], [15], [24], or in functional analysis [45].
