The English-Swedish Parallel Corpus: A resource for contrastive research and translation studies

Current research on the basis of the English Swedish Parallel Corpus is presented in the area of word order, text-linguistics and lexico/ogy. The method which is used to establish ‘mutual correspondences’ is illustrated by the comparison of English and Swedish adverbials and the cross-linguistic study of epistemic possibility. Special attention is paid to notions like translation equivalence, tertium comparationis and the problems caused by the influence from the source language on the translation. Various models of explaining cross-linguistic differences are discussed.
