Portfolio Management
George Tillmann · 2012
This chapter focuses on the process of portfolio management, which is the framework and set of processes that allow decision makers to analyze information technology (IT) investment requests for the purpose of approving those that meet enterprise objectives and rejecting those that do not. In the IT governance model, the portfolio management process starts with the special interest groups (SIGs) of the IT Steering Committee (ITSC). SIG members generate or uncover user requests for new or improved services and start the process of creating a business case for each. The ITSC councils monitor the business case creation of the SIGs. Those cases that show merit are passed on to the Executive Committee of the ITSC for consideration. The Executive Committee decides which of the project candidates to approve and fund and which to reject.
