Imagining Sound
Mark Grimshaw, Tom Alexander Garner · Oxford University Press eBooks · 2015
As the first of a two-part exploration of imagined sound, this chapter develops the themes of chapter 4, particularly justified true belief, by exploring auditory pathologies such as hallucination. It lays the groundwork for the assertion that imagined sound, or aural imagery, is as much sound as that deriving in the main from external sources such as sound waves. To this end, the chapter explores the presence of a number of components in the endosonus and their role in the emergence of sound: past experience; shared culture; clichés and expectations; materiality and physicality; and remnants of our evolutionary pre-history.
